The following represents some of the survival related websites that feature different aspects of outdoor,
wilderness, and urban survival. Enjoy!
Boulder Outdoor Survival School. Since 1968, the Boulder Outdoor Survival School -- known to
most simply as BOSS - has delivered life-changing, wilderness-based experiences to adventurous people all over
the world. "Know more, carry less" is one of our core philosophies and at BOSS, students are taught how
indigenous cultures around the world could often survive and even thrive without all the modern equipment people
today feel is necessary. As a result of their time on the trail with us, people gain competency in the
wilderness and confidence in themselves.
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Disasters strike anytime, anywhere. They take
many forms -- hurricanes, earthquakes, tornados, floods, fires or hazardous spills, acts of nature or acts of
terrorism. Disasters build over days or weeks, or hit suddenly, without warning. Every year, millions of
Americans face various disasters, and their terrifying consequences. FEMA’s mission is to support our citizens
and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability
to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards.
Municipal Research and Services Center (MRSC). The Municipal Research and Services Center
(MRSC) is a private, non-profit organization based in Seattle, Washington. Our mission is to promote excellence
in Washington local government through professional consultation, research and information services.
Ready America. Ready America is a national public service advertising campaign designed to
educate and empower Americans to prepare for and respond to emergencies including natural and man-made
disasters. The goal of the campaign is to get the public involved and ultimately to increase the level of basic
preparedness across the nation.
Survival Essentials. If you only want the survival essentials then you need to have the
following: First, one gallon of drinking water per person per day. Second, a basic first aid kit along with a
first aid manual. Third, non-perishable foods such as granola bars, crackers, dried fruits, canned goods,
electrolyte drinks like Powerade and Gatorade, dried meats, nuts, pastas, dry cereals, military ready to eat
meals (MREs), energy bars, and bottles or cans of fruit juice. Fourth, a good sleeping bag for every member of
your family and a quality tent in case you and your family need to live in the "wild." Your tent will serve as
your shelter. Fifth, knowing how to build a campfire, how to shoot and repair your own gun, and how to fish and
hunt and trap animals. And sixth, packing an "emergency survival kit" containing the following items: pepper
spray, aluminum foil (heavy duty for boiling water), a snake bite kit, toiletry items, a flashlight (with extra
batteries), a fire extinguisher, a pencil and paper, rope and string (at least 25 to 50 feet of each), extra
clothing, a metal container for boiling water and for cooking, duct tape, a whistle, rain gear (large plastic
garbage bags or ponchos), a mirror used for signaling others, cash or traveler's checks and change, matches, a
compass and a map, and basic tools such as a multi-purpose knife, a screw driver, a hammer, a multi tool with
saw, a manual can opener, and pliers.
Your Outdoor Survival. If you are a bird watcher, backpacker, hiker, hunter, fisherman,
sight seeder, camper or any other kind of outdoor enthusiast who loves the "wild," then you need to be prepared
for the likelihood that you will eventually have to successfully deal with an outdoor emergency that threatens
your survival. Examples include the following: a sand storm, a poisonous insect or snake bite, a tornado, an
injury or an accident, a flood, a man-made or a natural disaster, an earthquake, running out of food and/or
water, a mud slide, a wild fire, getting lost, a hurricane, a snow or an ice storm, or an attack by a wild
animal. When facing these survival threats you will need to stay calm, use your rational thinking skills, and
refuse to panic. Moreover, you will probably need to possess the following outdoor survival skills: how to
locate or construct a shelter to keep you dry, warm, and safe from inclement weather, poisonous insects and
plants, and wild animals, build a fire, hunt and fish for your food, locate and treat water so that it is
drinkable, attend to any first aid issues that may arise, and learn how to signal others in case you need some
assistance or need to be rescued.
Your Survival Gear. All the survival tips and survival gear on the planet are useless if the
individual panics and fails to think rationally in an emergency situation. This basically means that in order to
survive, an individual needs a "survival attitude." With the appropriate survival attitude and the ability to
implement basic survival tips, individuals who go into the great outdoors or into the wilderness will be
equipped to deal successfully with most emergencies and disasters they encounter.
Your Survival Shelter. Since you never know when you may be faced with an emergency in the
wilderness or the great outdoors, it makes a lot of sense for you to pack a tube tent. Indeed, a tube tent
provides adequate shelter, it is relatively quick and easy to erect, and it does not take up much room. If you
decide against packing a tube tent and you run the risk of staying in the wilderness more than a few hours, you
will have to find a "natural" shelter (e.g., a cave, large boulder, rock formation, or a tree with low hanging
branches) or build a shelter so that you can stay warm and dry and safe from wild animals and harsh weather
conditions.
Your Survival Skills. Even though it's not easy to implement, one of the primary things an
individual can do in an outdoor emergency situation is to have a solid survival plan and refuse to panic. When
facing an emergency situation in the great outdoors, calmly look at your map so that you know precisely where
you are and then take some time to get better acquainted with your surroundings. Indeed, armed with effective
survival skills and the knowledge how to follow through with these skills will help you do the following: learn
how to construct shelter so that you can stay safe, warm, and dry, gather food, water, and firewood, and create
a way of attracting rescuers to your current location in case you need assistance.
Your Survival Tips. When deciding to go out and venture into the great outdoors there are
many survival tips that people need to follow in case of an injury, a disaster, or an emergency. First, finding
or building a shelter to keep you warm, safe, and dry is critically important for outdoor survival. Second,
having a compass and a map are also important when going into the wilderness. Third, packing a metal container
for boiling water and water purification drops or tablets are two additional pieces of outdoor survival gear
that are needed. Fourth, it is imperative to be able to build a fire when you venture into the great outdoors.
Fifth, bringing a variety of clothing is important for outdoors survival due to the harsh weather conditions
that may occur. Sixth, bringing enough food is clearly important when venturing into the great outdoors.
Seventh, having a well-stocked first aid kit is necessary for surviving in the great outdoors. And finally, you
will need an "outdoors survival kit" that contains basic tools that will be invaluable when you are building
your animal traps, making a fire, boiling water, cooking, or when you are constructing a shelter. Examples
include a multi-tool with a saw, a manual can opener, an all purpose utility knife, and pliers.
Your Urban Survival. Concerning urban survival, start by constructing an urban survival
plan. When constructing this plan, make sure you think through a number of eventualities. For example, develop a
plan in case you are forced to evacuate your house, apartment, condo, or perhaps the city. Evacuation plans
should be of two types. One should focus on an evacuation by choice and the other should center on a government
mandated evacuation. If leaving your residence is not feasible, you need to make sure that your dwelling can be
defended against criminals, looting, fire, or any threat that may can arise. After you have completed your urban
survival plan, you need to gather essential equipment, gear, and supplies. For starters, make sure you have
plenty of non-perishable foods on hand (such as dried fruits, military ready to eat meals, crackers, granola
bars, dry cereals, energy bars, bottles or cans of juice, canned goods, nuts, dried meats, and electrolyte
drinks like Gatorade or Powerade) along with a good supply of plastic jugs of water (one gallon per person per
day). Then you need to ensure that you have a well stocked first aid kit. If you have to leave your residence,
make sure to take a sturdy tent and a good sleeping bag for each person in your household in case you have to
live outdoors. Additionally, make it a point to have the following items on hand and ready for quick access:
pepper spray, toiletry items, matches, extra clothing, a whistle, a flashlight (with extra batteries), and some
basic tools such as a multi-purpose knife, a manual can opener, a hammer, a multi-tool with a saw, a screw
driver, and pliers.
Your Wilderness Survival. To survive in the wilderness, you will need many of the basic
things you probably take for granted at home. For instance, when facing a wilderness survival situation, it is
important to pack plenty of non-perishable food. In addition, adequate water helps prevent dehydration. The need
for shelter is crucial in any wilderness survival situation. It will give you protection from sever weather
conditions as well as from biting insects, wild animals, and uninvited people. And finally, the ability to build
a fire is essential to wilderness survival. It can be used to boil water, keep warm, avoid frostbite and
hypothermia, cook food, and keep wild animals at bay.
